The news is scary and unpleasant, and the passions are weak, but they’re flickering. You ever hear how if a lightbulb is flickering, it means there’s a ghost there? This is kinda like that, but with passions.
Passions this week include In-N-Out Grilled Cheese, the Newsies soundtrack, Wrigley’s 5 watermelon flavored gum.
I went to a wedding but missed the plated dinner, so on the way home we stopped at the In-N-Out and I ordered what they call a “grilled cheese.” I call it “hamburger clothes.” It was a bun with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions and special sauce, and it was delicious. I ate it while driving. Also now I can drive on the freeway without shaking (well, I guess I shake all the time (like a yorkie), but now on the freeway, there’s no discernible increase in shaking).
I started playing the Newsies soundtrack when I’m feeling sad, and it really does the trick. What a talented group of youth boys!
Sometimes when I’m reading the news, I like to start chewing a stick of watermelon gum, and then I’ll add another, and another, and another, until the wad of gum is basically the size of a walnut and I’m so thirsty. My one-way ticket to TMJ Town.
And now some from the readers…
Ron: “Airplane Bathroom Lights Triggered By Locking Door. I remember every time someone's walked in on me while I was using the bathroom. This must be trauma because my long term memory is so so. I love walking into an airplane bathroom; locking the latch and seeing those overhead lights come on, knowing I'm safe from humiliation. I like that this system doesn't coddle you -- you enter into an unlit space and JetBlue trusts you to figure out how to light it. It shares nothing in common with modern restrooms that automate flushing, hand washing and hand drying. It's an analog experience. It also punishes people who purposely don't lock public bathroom doors -- they must sit in the dark and consider their choices.”
Richael: “I work night shift as a nurse, and my current passion is brewing a whole fresh pot of coffee at 2am just so I can have half a cup with 3 creams and 2 sugars. I’m not otherwise a coffee drinker, and the power I feel from knowing how to use the coffee maker is intoxicating. And then when my coworkers are glad to have hot and fresh coffee, it has the added benefit of making me feel benevolent towards the whole sleepy unit.”
Yoichi: “Trader Joe's Snacky Clusters - I mean they are delicious (so tasty in a snacky way) - but the name (the name) is great - almost sounds fake that's how good it is. Did someone accidentally make these while high - thank god - because they are so tasty."
