June Week 4?
I don't know I think this number system isn't working
My friend John Rosenberger passed away last week. He was so kind, funny, and easy to talk to. He used to make big batches latkes around Chanukah time and hand them out to all his friends. For some reason, he used my mom’s recipe for the applesauce. Even though I live really far away and rarely leave my house, he would still manage to gift me a container. A lot of comedians are funny, but few are sweet, and even fewer are givers. I’ll miss him a lot. If you knew him and/or wanted to support funds for his memorial, you can give here.
Anyway, just one passion this week, and it’s to puree the brain: Love Island.
I just finished my 19th episode of Love Island season 8. If you’re doing the math, that’s just about 76 hours of content. Watching the “freestyle” moment of the Temperature Rising challenge while sipping a mug of English Breakfast was just disgusting. Think of two physical piles of attractive 20-somethings, mostly undressed, grinding, kissing, sucking on each others’ feet while wincing. They’re competing to see which group will be the most “hot.” Now cut to me, the middle-aged viewer, watching this with a big bowl of Crispix. It’s wrong.
In other news, if you’re a Barnes and Noble member (I don’t know, some of you must be), I found out you can get 25% off your pre-order of Sex on Murder Island by entering PREORDER25 (all caps, no spaces) at checkout. I think this offer stands until Friday, June 26th. Here’s the link: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/sex-on-murder-island-jo-firestone/1148421889
Also, there are a few tickets avail for the book release show at the Bell House this coming Tuesday. Each ticket includes a signed copy of the book, plus you get to watch a fun panel show with Josh Sharp, Ana Fabrega, and Matt Barats. If you’ve seen Never Change, Ana Fabrega plays the barmaid who yells about the bugs in the kitchen and Matt Barats plays the nerd who keeps getting electrocuted and hit in the testicles <3. Josh Sharp isn’t in Never Change but he is in my favorite movie, Dicks The Musical, which I saw six times in theaters. He was also realllly funny doing a running bit with Aaron Jackson in this year’s Las Culturistas Culture Awards.
Anyway, I usually don’t have underlying messages for these stupid newsletters (lol what if I did), but if there’s anything I’ve learned this summer, it’s to enjoy good moments and laugh a lot, because when stuff is sad and bad, I’m really glad I have a reserve in there. Like this really funny, good stuff: Emmy Blotnick’s special on youtube!, Alison Leiby’s new book I’m A Lot, and the goddamn Jimmy Awards. It’s like when you’re on empty, but you park your car uphill, and it turns out you got just a little more in the tank. Hooray for car metaphors.
